Statement on SA Embassy in Israel

Category: Statements

On the 17th of November 2017, the Young Communist League of South Africa protested alongside other activists at the Department of the International Relation and Cooperation (Dirco) calling for the downgrade of relations with Israel.

We have been consistent in this clarion call to our ANC government and have not deviated from it, this specific protest took place after the ANC policy congress and the eve of the ANC’s 54th national congress which both successfully resolved to downgrade our embassy in Israel, a decision we support and champion. In fact, we had no option to support the downgrade of the SA Embassy in Israel to a liaison office since the Palestinian political parties themselves were the ones that asked us as South Africans to adopt such a position!

We thus warmly welcome with warm hands the announcement by the department that it has implemented that decision, to downgrade our embassy in Israel to a liaison office. Minister Lindiwe Sisulu announced that from now on, our offices in Israel “will have no political mandate, no trade mandate and no development cooperation mandate. It will not be responsible for trade and commercial activities”.

While there were many organizations and activists that have worked on this issue we would like to salute our young reds, our members, for having been consistent in their internationalism. This victory of the downgrade is your victory!

Israel is a settler colonial, imperialist, genocidal and Apartheid state. We have no business having ties with states such as Israel, this is exactly like how progressive governments cut ties with Apartheid South Africa.

Finally, we join our mother body, the SACP, in saluting all our branches, partner organizations and activists who participated in the recent successful 15th #IsraeliApartheidWeek.
